CANAL ZONERS

GETTING IN

TOUCH

This website is made up of information gathered from our members, all of whom have served in the Suez Canal Zone of Egypt during the 1940's and up to, and including the Suez Crisis of 1956.

The majority of our members were National Servicemen/women but we do have plenty of Regulars and Senior Officers, as well as younger members who were out there with their parents, attending school and living in married quarters around the Zone.

Everyone has at least one story to tell and, through this website, we hope to tell many of them. Every story or photo tells the tale of just how camp life was back in the 1940's and 50's in a foreign land. They show how, back in the days of National Service, you just got on with it. It was an adventure never to be forgotten. Many had never ventured further than their own home town, holidays (if taken) would be to a seaside resort within the UK (Blackpool, Margate, Brighton etc) and the majority still lived at home with their parents. It was a huge upheaval when their "Call Up" papers arrived and they were sent to a Basic Training Camp to learn the meaning of "Bull & Blanco" and "Square Bashing".

But friendships made during those times were never forgotten and many made lifelong friendships. Comradery existed in abundance. Still today, if you served in the Canal Zone, no matter where or with whom, you are considered a comrade. One unique factor binds everyone together and that is the fact that they were there and they served their time in the Suez Canal Zone, Egypt.

We are now in 2019, nearly 2020 which means that our existing members are now in their late 80's and early 90's. Most have told their tales and sent their photo's. We do still have plenty to add to this website but are now looking for more.

It is hoped that, should you be viewing this site, you have an interest or know somehow who does, in the events of this period in history. Maybe you have a story to tell or a collection of photos which could be included on this site. We have a unique huge collection of memorabilia relating to this period but we would love to add to it. Can you help - would you like your story told or your photos viewed?
