SUEZ EMERGENCY

NAVY SWOOPS ON PORT SAID WATERFRONT GANG
NOVEMBER 26th 1951

The Egyptian, stated to be the leader of the waterfront
gang, is brought aboard a British cruiser at Port Said

The Royal Navy’s anti-thug patrol swooped in a lightning raid and made a clean sweep of an Egyptian looting gang which has for weeks been terrorising the water front of Port Said.

The patrol launch, answering a call from the oiler, Blue Ranger, chased and caught a boat-load of Egyptians prowling the waterfront.

An Egyptian, stated to be the leader of the gang, was searched aboard the flagship. A paper found on him, stated that he was a deserter from the Egyptian Army. After interrogation, he was handed over to the British Army.

(Since trouble flared in the Canal Zone, the Royal Navy – which completely took over Port Said following a boycott by Egyptian labour – has maintained an anti-thug patrol of the waterfront).
