CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

As Remembered By James Welling

My stepfather, Major Anthony Barton, a gunner, was posted to Moascar Garrison and Fayid. I arrived by ship, the S.S. Orion, at Port Said in 1949, At first we lived in the Arab Quarter of Ismailia which I think was not really allowed. Later we moved to a flat above a dhobi in Arashia which overlooked quite a stretch of sand.

I went to the Army school at Moascar Garrison but I was not happy there with about 50 pupils in each class. I kept escaping from class until my parents moved me away and sent me to a private school in Ismailia. I remember the school classes ended early in the day and we spent a lot of time on the beach, particularly at The French Club which had a good vantage point to see the ships going by.
