H.M.S. DALRYMPLE - 1956-57

As Remembered By Jeff Hadley

Below are photos taken when we invaded Port Said in 1956. I was on the HMS Dalrymple, a survey ship. Because we carried no armament, we were escorted in by a destroyer. The intention was for our survey launches, fitted with echo sounders, to find a gap deep enough between the ships that were scuttled by Nasser to block the Canal. During our stay after the cease fire, we entertained some of the squaddies based ashore who had no proper means of washing or cooking etc. They were very grateful for our hospitality. After the French and British troops and Navies had left we stayed on under the United Nations Flag to assist with the clearing of the block ships. We had a contingent of Finnish UN troops on board and also we had to change our every day attire to black berets and overalls. We finally left in 1957.
