RAF SHALLUFA - 1953-54

As Remembered By Derek W. Stevens

I was posted to the Canal Zone round about October of 1953 until May 1955. In all about 20 months. I was posted first to RAF Shallufa. This was a restricted cam in which we were confined to the camp. The only time we went out was on guard duties, which involved manning the Pump Station at the Sweet Water Canal, escort duties and guarding the perimeter of the camp.

The one luxury we did have was our own swimming pool, which was used quite a lot. Also there was the cinema which I visited many times.

From here I was posted to RAF Ismailia (round about the middle of 1954). Here the restrictions were eased and we were able to visit the town of Ismailia and go to the cinema, although there was an open air cinema on the camp.
