Extracts From My Diary regarding the Church –

Tues. December 5th 1950
Padre Bowen held his first service at All Saints Church, Kasfareet.
The Anglican Club held a general meeting to elect a committee.

Mon. December 25th 1950 – Christmas Day
At 0700 hrs. the NCO i/c billet came round with chai for everyone.
At 1000 hrs. a makeshift band followed by nearly every airmen on the camp marched through all the W.A.A.F. billets, some of whom were still in bed.
Christmas dinner was a washout inspite of what the menu said.
At 1900 hrs a few members of the Anglican Club had a party - two Christmas puddings, two Christmas cakes, one bottle of port, Cyprus brandy and Muscat, twelve bottles of Stella, six McEwens and eight lemonades. Some of the Club members were merry by the time it came to go to bed.

Sun. 2nd December 1951
The Church Choir now have surplices to wear and wore them for the first time today.

Thurs. 13th December 1951
A Cpl of 5355 airfield Construction Wing was killed today by a mechanical shovel on the airfield.

Mon. 24th December 1951
A party of mixed religions met at the O.D. Club to go carol singing under the guidance of Padre
Oates. Our first port of call was the married families at El Hamra, then on to the Officers Mess where the singers were offered refreshments but Padre Oates declined the alcohol for everyone so we had ice cold lemonade. From there we went to the Officers Mess at 107 MU. After our singing we were supplied with piping hot soup. We then made our way to the Sgts Mess. The inside was like a ‘London pea souper’, thick cigarette smoke everywhere. We then went to the YMCA and sung carols on the stage. Tea was made available for the singers at the OD Club.
At 2345 hrs midnight communion commenced, it was sung to Merbecke. The service was by candlelight.

Tues. 25th December 1951 – Christmas Day
The Church Club closed down at 0300 hrs. We had stayed up to listen to Wireless For The Blind. A programme on 3 FBS where you pledged a certain amount of money to hear the record of your choice played. The most popular record was “My Truly Truly Fair”, they’d play a few bars of music then say it was worth more than what was pledged. Some Military Police asked for two minutes silence and got it. The record we requested was never played (I forget what it was). Something went wrong with the transmitters so they had to close down but they were back on the air by breakfast.
