Kasfareet 1951 – Crashed Canberra of 27 Sqdn
The plane crashed on take-off due to engine failure – the crew survived.
The plane was on a courtesy visit from Scampton, Lincs which was my old station

Empire Orwell (my transport to Port Said)
Built by Blohm & Vossin in Hamburg in 1936 it was originally called Pretoria and owned by the Germans.
Gross tonnage – 16,662 Length – 577ft Beam – 72.5ft Max Speed – 18 knots
Passengers 152 (1st Class) & 338 (Tourist class)
It was claimed by the British as a “War Prize”, converted to a troopship and re-named the “Empire Doon”.
It was later renamed (in 1948) to “Empire Orwell. It was managed for the Ministry of War Transport by the Orient Steam Navigation Company. In 1987 she was sold for scrap to Taiwanese breakers.
