RAF KASFAREET - 1943-44

As Remembered By 1391659 LAC Alexander Oliver Menzies

Marcus Menzies, grandson of the late Alexander O. Menzies (1924-2012) would like to share his grandfathers photos from his time in Kasfareet.

Marcus writes: My grandfather was in the RAF during WWII - from the 1st March 1943 to 28th April 1947. After serving in Kasfareet he returned home to Rainham, Kent where he married his sweetheart, Jose Jean, on the 28th June 1944. During the rest of his service with the RAF he was a pilot and flew transport and rescue missions thoughout the whole of WWII. One of his worst memories of the war was that of flying the wounded out of the Ardenne Forest. He recalled how he would take off with a plane full of living wounded servicemen but when he landed only a handful would still be alive.

He was an avid jazz drummer and belonged to a military band called "The Tommy Davis Swinging Six". I do not know whether or not they played in Kasfareet, but have included a couple of photos labelled 1945. Sadly no names are included on the photos. but maybe, through this website, other family members may be able to recognize their relatives
