VICTOR RODNEY JONES

1952-54

Victor Rodney Jones, better known to all as Rod, joined the R.A.F. in January 1952. After Basic Training at R.A.F. Kirby and Trade Training at R.A.F. Weeton, he set sail aboard the H.T. Lancashire on the 23rd August 1952, making a brief stop at Malta where he was allowed ashore and finally arrving in the Canal Zone on the 6th September 1952.

Posted to R.A.F. Kasfareet, Rod resided in Tent K2 and later in Billet 14. He worked in the Fitting Bay where he would maintain the various vehicles and equipment around the camp. He was also a projectionist at the Astra Cinema. He left Kasfareet in June 1954, travelling by plane to Cyprus where he enjoyed two weeks leave, before returning back to the UK.

Upon leaving the Canal Zone, Rod remained in the R.A.F and was stationed at R.A.F Binbrook, RAAF Edinburgh, Australia and R.A.F. Rattlesden up until 1962 when he left the R.A.F.

Rod sadly died in 2008, but his daughter, Hilary has very kindly taken the time to scan and send all of these (nearly 200) photos and memorabilia from his time in the Canal Zone which both she and her family would like to share with you and would love to hear from anyone who remembers her dad - get in touch via The Canal Zoners
