R.A.F. FAYID 1953-55

As Remembered By 4087040 Phil (Yorky) Readman

I was a mobile crane driver at R.A.F. Fayid from March 1953 until September 1955, and worked on all squadrons changing propellers etc.

At that time, there were five squadrons of Valettas, so I was very interested to read Cliff (Taffy) Thomas’s account of the time so soon after I had left. (Story published Spring 1999 Edition sent with May 2022’s issue)

I don’t remember all the numbers, but I do remember the colours of the nose cones; they were black, blue, green, yellow and red.

I am still in touch with an engine fitter off the Red 78 squadron.

There were no Hastings stationed there at that time, but they came most nights from England with freight etc at 23:59hrs to be unloaded, refuelled and reloaded for the return journey back home.

The two photos below are of my work horse – 17 AC 77, and also one of us three crane drivers; it must have been my day off as I am in civvies. The lad on the right taught me, and, if I remember correctly, he was Welsh.
