Remembering those L.S.T.’s Snowdon Smith & Humphrey Gale

I was at RAF Abu Sueir at the closing period in 1955 and one of the tasks was to take our vehicles up to Port Said for shipment to various bases in the Middle East i.e. Habbaniya, Aquaba and El-Adam.

These two vessels had two decks and were flat bottomed, so certainly rocked about a bit! So loading them up made me a bit queasy – I’m no sailor, flying for me everytime!

I finally left from Abu Sueir as one of a group of about 20 plus on a Brittania Airways airliner whilst the Egyptian Air Force were parading on the square which once had 13 and 208 Squadron Meteor jets parked on it.

I thoroughly enjoyed my tour of 2½ years at RAF Abu Sueir and Egypt in particular.
