OUR POW's
As Remembered By Tony MacKenzie-Farmer
The German POW’s were returning to their own country after
being held for some time in Egypt, apparently until Germany had began to recover
after the war. There were 3 POW’s working at the Fayid Education Centre
– Von Buderbrock, Matisse and a German U-boat Captain. We decided to
have a
farewell party for them but the stumbling block was that the Germans insisted
that there should be wine to drink.
How to find wine in God-forsaken Fayid on our pay seemed impossible. Then came the idea that would prove that Fayid was not so God-forsaken after all. We went to the padre who had wine in abundance and, when hearing our dilemma, supplied us with a crate of his best Communion Wine.
We had a great party, even though we did not have a cork extractor
and had to push the corks into the bottles but those Germans had a good send-off.
