ENRICO D'ELIA
One of the first to be interned & one of the last to leave
Italian born Enrico was a draughtsman living and working in Cairo. He loved to draw sketches but, as Secretary of the Fascist Club, when Italy joined the war he was immediately “blacklisted” and collected by the British Soldiers, along with his brother Vincent. It seems that he was one of the first to be interned and one of the last to leave. His brother Vincent was exiled to Australia aboard the Queen Elizabeth (leaving from Port Said) and, along with other Italian and German POWs, spent some time at Tatura Camp. Upon release, Enrico returned to Cairo, married and had a family. Later he decided to join his brother who had settled in Australia.
