2019 ANNIVERSARY REUNION
WEEKEND 6th - 9th SEPTEMBER 2019
NORTH CAMP METHODIST CHURCH, WREATH LAYING SERVICE & PARADE
Sunday morning and we boarded the coach to take us to the Royal British Legion Club in Farnborough for pre-Parade refreshments and to await the arrival of further VIP's, local cadet forces, other Standards, band etc.
Guests of Honour for our Canal Zoners Service & Parade included:
The Worshipful The Mayor of Rushmoor, Cllr. Sue Carter & Her Escort, Mr. Ian White
Lt. Col Thomas A. Donohoe, DCOS - 8 Engineer Brigade
WO1 Keith Weller, Royal Navy.
At 1:30 pm, it was back on the coach for a short trip to North Camp Methodist Church for our Service of Remembrance. Upon arrival at the church, we were met by the Reverend Chris Blake, Minister North Camp Methodist Church and David Betts, Aldershot Garrison Chaplaincy Team, who were to conduct our Canal Zoners Service of Remembrance.
Following the Service, it was back on the coach for a short trip down Alexandra Road to the Memoral for our Wreath Laying Service. This year there was a surprise in store as a Scottish Piper had been booked for our Wreath Laying Service. Tony Hurst (Tony The Piper) duly piped members off the coach and led them to the Memorial. He certainly drew the attention of passers-by who joined us for our Service.
During the Service, Tony piped a very haunting "Oft In The Stilly Night" instead of the tradional Last Post (normally played on a bugle) and "Flowers Of The Forest" (instead of the Reville) during which he slowly walked away with the pipes fading into the distance. A very moving and unforgetable addition to our Service. Wreaths were laid by all our visiting dignitaries.
Due to the age and agility of The Canal Zoners, it was decided this year to shorten our Parade to a more manageable route. The route chosen was a short distance from the Memorial back to the Royal British Legion (along Guildford Road East) with the March Past being taken by The Mayor of Rushmoor, Cllr. Sue Carter and Lt. Col Thomas Donohoe. Tony led the Parade, piping us all safely back to the Royal British Legion, continuing non-stop until he had seen the "last man home".
It was now time for well earned refreshmens and all our dignitaries joined us spending time chatting to everyone who had taken part in the days events.
At 5:00pm the coach returned us to The Three Frogs where we were welcomed back and enjoyed an evening roast dinner.
Our thanks go out to North Camp Methodist Church for being so accomodating to us, St Marks Church for the use of their chairs at our Wreath Laying Service and, of course, to the Royal British Legion, Farnborough, for all their support and use of their facilities.
