SANDCASTLES IN THE AIR FORCE
Printed in the Daily Mirror 1955
My
son, who is serving with the RAF in the Canal Zone, wrote this in a recent
letter home: “one of our officers has ordered us to build small walls round our tents, using only sand and water. It’s just like making sand castles. On the radio and every notice board there are warnings about water shortage, yet here we are using 800 gallons of purified drinking water a day to make these walls. And by the end of the week the sun will have powdered the walls back into useless sand.” - Mother, Kent |
John G.A.V. McKernon, RSF El Hamra 1953-55 in response to the above Newspaper cutting writes:
This is my tent and the little sand walls we had to do which used a lot of water when water was rationed on our camp at El Hamra
