HQ WORKSHOPS, GORDON LINES (R.E.) MOASCAR 1950-52
As Remembered By Bob (Jock) Taylor
I was called up for National Service in August 1950 and reported to 8 TRRE, Elgin, Scotland. After 26 weeks training, I left Elgin in mid December via Harwich, Hook of Holland to Trieste, only to be told that we should not be there. There were ten of us and we were supposed to be replacing ten there but as time of service was increased to 2 years we were not needed and so sent to Egypt instead. There they didn’t know about us either so they sent two of us to Moascar and the others elsewhere.
When the troubles broke out and the local labour force walked out of the Filtration Plant, as we were a small camp of only about 50 Sappers, some of us had to do 2 twelve hour shifts for about six weeks until another R.E. Regiment arrived from England.
I left Egypt in mid July 1952 and flew back home in a Hermes to Blackbushe, then onto Barton Stacey. Two weeks later I arrived back home in Aberdeen.
