Peter Reynolds wonders if there are any other members out there who remembers an incident that took place at the RE Base Workshops Jerrycan Factory, Fayid, on the 23rd March 1953 during the early hours (approx. 04:30 hrs) of the morning.
He remembers that Corporal Salter was offered a bribe of £300 to let two Egyptian vehicles into the Jerrycan Factory next time he was Guard Commander in order that they could steal the sheet metal used to make the jerrycans. He reported this to the H.Q. and was instructed to go along with the plan the next time he was guard commander. This was done and the normal guard was taken over by the Military Police.
When the natives arrived they were let into the factory gates and proceeded to the steel stacking area. There then ensured a ‘shoot up’ with many of the natives being injured or maybe killed.
Corporal Salter, who let in the natives had his life threatened by the originator
of the theft. He was moved to another Engineer Unit in Fanara but his whereabouts
became known. He was then drafted away to Cyprus
where he was yet again located, he then left for the UK
