RAMC 6th Field Ambulance 1953-55

As Remembered By Kenneth Mackenzie

Saved By The Goalie

It was December 16th, 1953 and our group 51-18 RAMC 6th Field Ambulance Unit we at Stanstead ready to fly to Egypt. Owing to thick fog, we didn't take off until 5 pm. This was my first time in a plane and I was petrified. I kept my eyes closed and gripped the armrests until we were airborne. Then I looked out of the window and to my amazement saw flames coming from the engine. In a state of panic, I pointed this out to my mate next to me. He assured me it was normal as he had flown many times before (he was Ron Springett - the England and QPR Goal Keeper) to his reassurances calmed me down!
